DStv XtraView allows two or three compatible decoders to operate under one subscription. Each decoder connects to its own television, allowing people in different rooms to watch different channels at the same time.
A reliable XtraView installation requires more than placing an additional decoder in another room. The decoder models must be compatible, the satellite equipment must distribute the correct signals and each decoder must be configured for its role within the system.
Our DStv XtraView installers in Cape Town can assess your existing dish, LNB, cabling and decoders before recommending the required setup. We assist with completely new multi-room installations, upgrades from single-view systems and changes to existing XtraView arrangements.
XtraView links compatible decoders so that they operate together under one DStv account. One decoder is assigned as the primary decoder, while the additional decoder or decoders operate as secondary units.
Each television requires its own decoder for independent viewing. The primary and secondary decoders receive the same subscribed DStv package, but each viewer can select a different channel.
This differs from distributing the output of one decoder to several televisions. When multiple televisions share one decoder, they normally display the same channel. XtraView provides independent viewing because each connected television has a separate decoder.
The linked system also requires communication between the primary and secondary decoders. This communication is commonly known as the XtraView heartbeat and must remain active for the secondary decoder or decoders to continue working.
A two-decoder XtraView installation is suitable for households that want independent DStv viewing in two rooms. One decoder might be connected in the main lounge while the second serves a bedroom, family room or another viewing area.
The installation can combine compatible HD and Explora decoders. The exact arrangement depends on the decoder models, the equipment already installed and whether the household may want to add a third decoder later.
Where an Explora forms part of the setup, it is commonly assigned as the primary decoder. The primary decoder sends the required heartbeat communication to the secondary decoder.
Both decoder locations need suitable satellite cabling and connections. The system must also have a compatible dish, LNB and signal-distribution arrangement that can provide each decoder with the required signal.
Once the physical installation has been completed, the decoders must be linked on the customer’s DStv account. An Access Fee may apply according to the decoder combination and DStv’s current account rules.

A three-decoder XtraView system allows independent viewing on three televisions using supported decoder combinations. This can suit larger households with several bedrooms, living areas or entertainment spaces.
The primary decoder in a three-decoder arrangement must be a compatible DStv Explora. The other two decoders must form part of a combination permitted by DStv.
Each decoder requires its own cable route, television connection and correct configuration. The Smart LNB or other signal-distribution equipment must have sufficient capacity for the selected decoder combination.
Planning is especially important when the televisions are located far apart. Cable routes should be practical, protected and kept as neat as the property allows. Existing cabling may be reused if it is compatible and in suitable condition.
DStv applies additional account requirements when three decoders are linked. The customer’s subscription and Access Fees must be updated through DStv after the physical equipment has been installed and configured.
The work required depends on the number and type of decoders, property layout and condition of the existing satellite equipment.
A DStv XtraView installation may include:
Existing dishes, LNBs and cables are reused only when they are compatible and serviceable. Damaged or unsuitable equipment can affect every decoder connected to the system.
Not every DStv decoder can be linked in every possible combination. Compatibility depends on the decoder model, number of decoders and equipment used to distribute the satellite signal.
The model numbers of existing decoders should be checked before the installation is planned. This helps determine whether the proposed combination is supported and whether an additional or replacement decoder is required.
Some older DStv decoders can operate in particular XtraView combinations, but their role within the system may be restricted. A legacy decoder may also require different cabling or heartbeat arrangements from a modern Smart LNB installation.
When three decoders are connected, the primary decoder must be an Explora. For two-decoder systems, the most suitable primary decoder depends on the models being linked and how the household uses them.
If an existing primary decoder is being removed or replaced, the current XtraView link should first be updated through DStv. Disconnecting equipment without changing the account and physical arrangement can leave the secondary decoder unable to operate.

DStv recommends an 80cm satellite dish and Smart LNB for most residential XtraView installations where the household uses its own dish.
The Smart LNB receives the satellite signal and distributes the required signal feeds to the connected decoders. In many modern installations, it removes the need for a separate multiswitch and allows decoders to be installed in different rooms.
Each decoder requires the correct cable connection and user-band settings. Assigning conflicting user bands or using unsuitable outputs can prevent one or more decoders from receiving a stable signal.
The satellite dish must be securely mounted, accurately aligned and free from obstructions. A marginally aligned dish may appear to work on one decoder while creating missing channels, pixelation or intermittent errors on another.
Existing cabling should also be checked for damage, corrosion, loose connectors and unsuitable joins. Multi-room systems have more cable routes and connections, making careful installation and testing important.
The XtraView heartbeat allows the linked decoders to confirm that they form part of the same installation. The primary decoder sends the heartbeat to the secondary decoder or decoders.
If the heartbeat is interrupted, the secondary decoder can stop displaying subscribed channels even if it is still receiving a satellite signal. The primary decoder may continue operating normally.
Heartbeat problems can result from incorrect decoder settings, cabling faults, incompatible equipment, conflicting user bands or the primary decoder being switched off or disconnected.
Modern compatible installations can carry the required communication through the Smart LNB and satellite cabling. Some older decoder combinations may use a separate heartbeat cable or different distribution arrangement.
The correct arrangement depends on the decoder models. Testing must confirm that each secondary decoder receives both the required satellite signal and stable communication from the primary decoder.
XtraView and an additional TV point serve different viewing needs.
An additional TV point distributes the output from one decoder to another television. Both televisions ordinarily display the same channel because they share one decoder.
XtraView connects a separate compatible decoder to each television. This allows different channels to be watched independently in different rooms.
An additional TV point may be suitable when the same selected channel will be watched on multiple televisions. XtraView is more appropriate when household members need independent control over what they watch.
The equipment and ongoing account requirements are also different. XtraView requires compatible decoders and may attract Access Fees, while a basic additional TV point does not add another independently controlled decoder.

Flats, apartments and residential complexes often use communal satellite systems rather than individual dishes. These shared systems require a different approach from a house with its own 80cm dish and Smart LNB.
A DStv Smart LNB is generally intended for single residential properties using their own satellite dish. It is not automatically the correct distribution solution for a multiple-unit building.
Before installing XtraView in a flat, the existing wall outlets, communal distribution equipment and available signal feeds must be assessed. The building’s system must be able to provide each decoder with the required signals and user bands.
Additional cabling or changes to communal equipment may require approval from the landlord, body corporate or property manager. Where an individual dish is permitted, its location and cable route must comply with the property’s rules.
The physical installation connects and configures the dish, LNB, cabling and decoders. DStv must then link the compatible decoders on the customer’s account.
The customer may need to provide decoder or smartcard details so that DStv can assign the primary and secondary roles and apply the correct Access Fee arrangement.
Two linked decoders normally involve the main subscription and an Access Fee, although the account treatment can depend on whether a PVR Access Fee is already being charged. A three-decoder arrangement can require two Access Fees.
Linked decoders receive the channels included in the same DStv package. Different subscription packages cannot be assigned to individual decoders within one XtraView arrangement.
Access Fee amounts and account requirements are determined by DStv and may change. DStv Connect can assist with the installation and linking process but does not control subscription pricing or billing decisions.
The cost of a DStv XtraView installation depends on the number of decoders, their compatibility and the equipment required at the property.
Connecting a second compatible decoder to an existing 80cm dish and Smart LNB will differ from upgrading an older installation that requires a new dish, LNB and several cable routes.
Pricing can also be affected by the distance between rooms, accessibility of the cable routes, number of television points and condition of the existing equipment. Three-decoder systems generally require more cabling and configuration than two-decoder arrangements.
Flats and complexes may require additional assessment or changes to communal infrastructure. Older decoder combinations can also require different equipment from newer Smart LNB systems.
Providing the decoder model numbers, property type and intended viewing rooms helps us determine what is required. The XtraView installation quote can then reflect the equipment, cabling and configuration needed for the actual setup.

An XtraView system depends on compatible decoders, correct signal distribution and stable communication between the primary and secondary units. Problems in any of these areas can prevent independent viewing from working properly.
DStv Connect assesses the existing system before planning the installation. This includes checking the decoder models, satellite dish, LNB, cabling and room layout.
We install two-decoder and three-decoder XtraView systems, upgrade suitable existing installations and troubleshoot problems affecting multi-room viewing. Each connected television is tested to confirm that the decoder receives a stable signal and operates independently.
